Review: May Birchbox

Palm Leaves & Warm Breeze… that’s the theme for May’s Birchbox. With warm breezes just starting to waffle into London, the anticipation of swopping layers to lightweight summer dresses is something I’m definitely looking forward to.

There weren’t any full-size products this month. (Bummer) But prior to getting my May box, I was given a choice of a lip stain from Doucce in either Steaming Red or Amber-Rose. I chose the former.

IMG_5244Doucce Luscious Lip Stain in Steaming Red (size not specified)– Despite its name, this is NOT a red. It’s more of a deep rosewood which I could see suiting many skin tones. It’s also NOT a stain, but full coverage matte liquid lipstick.

On the Doucce website, these lip stains come with a clear gloss. I didn’t get a gloss in my box, so I can only talk about what the “matte effect” is like. This lip stain has a thin consistency and only one swipe is needed. It dries down fast (which makes the colour deepen further). It reminds me a lot of Huda Beauty matte liquid lipsticks.

IMG_5340There’s zero transfer but it did not withstand a curry meal. (Longevity of a lipstick doesn’t bother me so much, as I prefer to remove all my lipstick after a meal and apply a fresh coat.)

Other beauty treats this month included:IMG_5242Greenfrog Botanic Geranium & Peppermint Botanical Bodywash (50ml) – I find organic body washes and shampoos don’t lather up very much.  This one is no exception, although it makes a good base for shaving as it feels like a silky lotion. Despite it having peppermint, there is no tingly, refreshed feeling that usually comes with using minty shower gels. I didn’t feel squeaky clean and definitely wouldn’t use this after a workout.

IMG_5236Native Unearthed Activated Charcoal Natural Deodorant Balm (15g) – This is an interesting product as I’ve never used a cream-in-jar deodorant. There isn’t much of a scent and the consistency reminds me of a matte face primer. It rubbed in easily and I could wear my clothes immediately after application. I tested it out during a particularly hot day in London. After 20 minutes of walking, I can definitely say that this isn’t sweat-absorbing. Two damp patches started to appear and I had to swing my arms a little more brusquely to try and dry my pits down. Not an attractive look at all.

Nuxe Aquabelle Micro-Exfoliating Purifying Gel (15ml) – I love exfoliators and products from Nuxe. So this is a double win! It has a luxe perfumey fragrance, just like all of Nuxe’s products, which I really like. It’s a gentle, yet effective exfoliant and I’ve been using it every morning since I received my box.

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner in black (1.2g) – This felt pen has a super easy to control brush tip. The nib is stiff enough to create a sharp winged eye yet pliable enough that I didn’t feel like I was stabbing myself in the eyelid. I’m not sure if these come in other colours, but mine is an intense black, which I love. It lasted the whole day and came off easily with makeup remover.

I have to say, I really enjoyed my May Birchbox. Apart from Nuxe and Eyeko, I got to try out three new brands and three skincare products. This box gets a 4/5 from me!

What did you get in your Birchbox this month? Did you enjoy it? I’d love to know.
